Entry#6- the ocean...

 Hello everyone,

Today I will be writing about the ocean. There was a point in time in which I wanted to be a marine biologist to study animals and their environment. Although I do not like the ocean all together, I do enjoy seeing the different species of animals and plants that thrive in it. I'm not at all an ocean expert, but I will be sharing my favorite animals or the ones which I find most interesting.

A species of animal which caught my eye ever since I first heard about it was the umbrella octopus (aka dumbo octopus). The reason I chose this animal was because I found that they were cuter than most sea creatures. The picture may give it away but the reason behind the name was the fins which resemble Dumbo's ears from the Disney movie. This octopus is the deepest living of its species. Contrary to popular belief not all octopuses have an ink sac, the Dumbo octopus is one of them. According to Oceana, "..the Dumbo octopus doesn't have an ink sac because it rarely encounters predators in the deep sea". This creature is adorable and I think a lot of people would agree if they saw them.

Another sea creature which I find interesting is the Sea-angel. This animal caught my attention because of its transparent body. this transparency helps it hide from deep-sea predators like jellyfish and whales. Oddly enough they are a type of snail which thrives in open water. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, "Sea Angels have a small, transparent, gelatinous body and do not have a shell". Transparent animals are something I've always found interesting so it is no surprise that I chose this sea animal as one of my favorites.

Hopefully everyone who read this found it fun and interesting. I don't necessarily love the ocean, in fact I am terribly afraid of open water, but I like to learn new things about all the species that live in it.

  1. Hello Abigail, I really enjoyed reading your post! I found it very interesting since I have never heard of these two sea creatures before. I found the dumbo octopus adorable due to their tiny ears and color pattern. I also found the sea-angel interesting because of their transparency and ability to hide from sea predators.

  3. Hello Abigail! I really enjoyed reading this blog post, and I think the umbrella octopus is kind of cute! I am also a little afraid of the ocean and how little scientists know about it. Transparent animals have always amazed me, they look so majestic.
