Entry #1- my hobby

Good day everyone,

In this post I will be writing about one of my many hobbies which is volleyball. When I was younger, some friends and family would gather to play a game of volleyball at the park every week. Although I was young, I understood the rules of the game easily because I had been playing for a while and there were always people who would help me if I made a mistake. There are many reasons why volleyball is such a great sport.

While it is a sport and typically sports are confusing at times, I believe it is one of the easiest sports to understand. The concept of volleyball is to get the ball over the net in a certain number of hits to earn a point. The desired number of hits is 3. Someone on the team "receives" the ball, someone "passes", and finally someone "spikes" or just passes it over the net (in that order). There is a good amount of rules one has to follow, but if it's just a friendly game the rules can be suggestions.

When playing a game there is a sense of community. When a "team" is built, the team is supposed to work together to win. It is even better when people you don't know ask to play and create an even bigger team. Everyone depends on each other, if a person messes up or makes a wrong move, it is encouraged that everyone claps to keep the spirits high.

In all honesty, I believe everyone should join a game of volleyball once in a while. Playing a game of volleyball once a week when I was younger is something that I still think about nowadays. The sense of community and how easy it is to understand has kept me playing it, even when it is just my sister and I.

  1. Hi Abigail, I loved reading your blog post! I have not played very much volleyball but I would like to play more! I’ve played a few times. I started out worried because I’m not very athletic, but once I loosened up I really enjoyed it! I love how you mentioned those times growing up and how you still think about those to this day! I appreciate how you talked about how much you love the sport, and also explained what the sport is and how to play. I also liked the photos you added!

  2. Hello Abigail, I really enjoyed reading your blog! I relate to it in a variety of ways. I used to play volleyball in middle school and some of my high school, but I haven’t played a lot since then. When I did play though, it was so much fun, and something that I really enjoyed. I agree that it is an easy concept to understand, but some of the rules are so precise and situational, that I didn’t understand some of them when I was younger. Volleyball did help build bonds with teams and community within players.

  3. Hi Abigail, Your description of the sense of friendship in volleyball makes perfect sense to me, and it matches my own experiences playing soccer. A special connection is formed between players because of their cooperation, support, and group mentality. The feeling of coming together supporting one another, and acknowledging teamwork is genuinely outstanding regardless of the sport—volleyball or soccer. Keep having fun with the beautiful game and the relationship! - Marco Gutierrez
